Hi Paul,

It is not that much of a nuisance, but to address the question.

First thing is to trim as much of the post that is not relevant
to a reply. If no quote is needed as is often the case, then
it may be best to start with a blank message (Ctrl+A, then Delete
should be the quickest way).

Also, since you are a digest subscriber (all emails together)
it can be a little bit harder to respond with specificity.
The email client will not know what the subject is or which
message to quote.

If you look at the message below, the Subject is the very bland,
"CR Digest, Vol 22, Issue 22" (a golden issue perhaps). Also,
every message is attached. Left unedited and posted, this would
resend every post from Issue 22 in Issue 23.

If the digest version is what you are set on, you might find
better functionality in the MIME/HTML version. It may be easier
in some email clients to read and reply based on the subject of
the message.

However, if you can set your CR email to filter into a single
folder, you might find plain delivery is best. It is trivial
to delete messages of no interest, save the good ones, and when
a reply is needed, the right subject and reply-to message are
in the new email.

Also, I do not know if you are on webmail, it is trivial to
get that on a desktop client too from any provider. AOL has
instructions for setting up IMAP:

http://about.aol.com/faq/openmailaccess

A word of caution about IMAP: If memory serves, IMAP maintains
a mirror-like state of your webmail (server). So if you delete
a message in an IMAP client it will delete off the server too:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Message_Access_Protocol

If webmail is web only and POP3 is desktop only, then IMAP is
like the hybrid version. That is a bad over-simplification.

Lastly, here is a copy of posting guidelines

http://www.calorierestriction.org/node/130

and here is a page to change account settings (e.g., mime/html
digest or regular email delivery)

http://lists.calorierestriction.org/mailman/listinfo/cr_lists.calorierestriction.org
(use the box on the bottom, you may have to create a password
or have one sent to you if that has not been done in the past).

PS: To reply to an individual off-list - like your message below
which the whole list doesn't need - you have to find the "From:"
address. This can be easy or hard depending on the email client.
If there is a 'view message source' option, that will show the
information. Often, the individual poster's address has to be
cut'n'paste into the "To:" field of the new email.
