Re: "Through the search engine, for the moment, the
archives are now open to the public, not just enrolled mailing list
members. This opens up every member of the mailing lists to having his
or her email address culled for spam and his or her hitherto
semi-private -- i.e., for list members only -- communications
available for worldwide publication, including indexing in Google and
other search engines."

That appears accurate - e.g. see this Google cache page:

http://64.233.183.104/search?q=cache:FtJCWc4C8RoJ:www.calorierestriction.org/archive/read.php%3F2,185150,185152+%22actually+comes+from+ANIMAL+sources%22&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1

I think this has been true for a while for the recent archives - though until
recently, the archives prior to last year were not so exposed.
